Motherhood Series with Amy Higgins
IN HER WORDS
A Special Mother's Day Edition featuring
Amy Higgins
Perth, Australia • Mother of Harvey (3) & Goldie (5.5 months)

Amy was creating space for me to be a better mother long before she became one herself.
She didn't know that's what she was doing. Neither did I, really, not until much later. To both of us, at the time, she was simply my hairdresser. I had been sitting in her chair since 2012, watching her grow into her craft, evolve, eventually leave a reputable salon and quietly build her own thriving business from the ground up.
We booked appointments twelve months in advance. That was just the way we organised them. If you wanted a consistent place in her diary, you set the date a year out, organised the childcare just as far ahead, and you didn't move it for anything. No rescheduling. No "I'll see what the week looks like." A date in the calendar that simply became a guilt free opportunity to have to myself.
And here is what that quietly did to me, over years: it taught me how to plan for myself. To ask for help. To accept it when it was offered. To treat a couple of hours as something worth protecting, not apologising for. Amy held that time like it mattered, slow, attentive, completely present, and somewhere along the way, I realised how important this time was for me to be the best version of myself.
I always walked out of her chair feeling more like myself with a renewed energy. And I always told her so.
So you can imagine the full-circle weight of now sharing Amy's own motherhood story. To watch her become a mother to Harvey and Goldie while still building her business, doing all of it with a quiet confidence and a strength I have always admired in her.
And there is no story I'd rather share with you today, on Mother's Day. This is a special edition of In Her Words, for the mothers who give everything, and who deserve a moment of their own.
Here is Amy, in her words.
When you think back to the moment you became a mother, what do you remember most clearly?
That overwhelming feeling of love, but also the unknown. It was the moment everything shifted, nothing else mattered the same way anymore.
What surprised you about motherhood that no one really prepared you for?
How all-consuming it is. The mental load. The constant thinking about them, even when you're trying to rest.
In what ways have you grown or changed since becoming a mother?
I've become softer, but also stronger. I have so much more patience now, but I also protect my energy a lot more.
What is a small, ordinary moment with your child that feels deeply meaningful to you?
The quiet cuddles, especially at the end of the day. When everything slows down and it's just us.
What does love look like when you're exhausted?
Still showing up. Even when you feel like you have nothing left, you somehow find more to give.
Is there a daily ritual that grounds you in this season of motherhood?
Our morning cuddles and feeds. It's calm, slow, and reminds me to be present before the day begins.
What do you feel most proud of in your motherhood journey so far?
That my babies feel safe, loved, and secure. That's everything to me.
What kind of legacy, emotional or otherwise, do you hope to pass on?
To be kind, grounded, and to always know their worth. I want them to feel deeply loved and confident in who they are.
If you could speak to yourself at the beginning of motherhood, what would you say?
Trust yourself more. You're doing better than you think.

There's a softness to Amy's answers that I recognise, and a quiet authority underneath them. Softer but stronger. Showing up even when there's nothing left. Trusting yourself more.
These are the things we whisper to ourselves on the hard days, and the things we forget to say out loud on the good ones. I'm so grateful for Amy's heartfelt honesty.
Thank you, Amy, for the years of conversations in your chair, for the appointments that taught me how to take up space, and for sharing this part of your story with such generosity.
With Love, Kirst x
